The Bayside Historical Society and Bayside Hills Civic Association are partnering to hold a Veterans Day ceremony at the Captain Dermody Triangle in Bayside on Nov. 11. In addition to these organizations, several community leaders and honored guests will be on hand.
A wreath will be laid to honor Civil War veteran and Bayside native Captain William C. Dermody, along with all those who fought in the Civil War. Additionally, representatives from Company K, 67th New York Infantry Volunteers Association will be on hand in period-correct Civil War soldier attire. They will be joined by an honor guard carrying a reproduction of the actual infantry’s Regimental Flag and a drummer during a “present arms” salute.
The ceremony will also include a rededication of the Captain Dermody Triangle, which was recently renovated.
The event is scheduled to be held at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 48th Avenue and 216th Street in Bayside. It is free and open to the public.
William C. Dermody was an outspoken abolitionist. He volunteered with the Union’s 67th New York Infantry during the Civil War, serving in Company K. This was the first regiment of volunteers from Long Island. He was mortally wounded during the Battle of Spotsylvania, VA, in 1864. Dermody Triangle was dedicated to his memory in 1866 by a ceremonial meeting of a Union and Confederate veteran. An inscription on the monument says “For a Better Union 1861-1865.”
