Council Member Nantasha Williams and State Senator Leroy Comrie will host the third annual “Fall Family Fun Day” in Queens Village on Saturday, Oct. 26, from noon to 4 p.m.
The family-friendly event will be held at Wayanda Park, located at 217-60 Hollis Ave., and will feature a pumpkin patch, candy giveaways, amusement activities, and a family resource fair. Children are encouraged to come in costume for the Halloween-themed festivities.
As part of the event, Council Member Williams will also lead a check presentation ceremony, announcing $6.4 million in funding for the reconstruction of Wayanda Park.
Wayanda Park holds deep historical significance in Queens. Originally converted into a playground in 1912 at the request of the first Queens Parks Commissioner, Walter Graeme Eliot, the park has undergone several renovations over the years. Notable upgrades include the addition of tennis courts in 1926, as well as sand pits, handball courts, a ball field and new play equipment in 1950.
In 2003, archeologists uncovered fragmented human remains at the site, revealing its use as a burial ground in the late 1800s. Today, the park is a vital community space, offering basketball courts, game tables, handball courts, swings and a playground. The playground is a Jointly Operated Playground (JOP), serving both P.S. 34 students and the surrounding neighborhood.
