Slow start dooms Molloy hockey to 7-2 loss

By Dylan Butler

It was in that first period the undefeated Flyers scored five goals – three in the first 4:48 – en route to a 7-2 win over Molloy.

“Outside of the first period, we played tough,” Kalaf said. “The defense wasn't covering and they scored a lot of easy goals. We could have easily played them to a tie or a win [for us].”

It was the third time Kellenberg (4-0 CHSHL 'A') faced a Queens team promoted from the 'B' division. The Flyers also easily defeated Christ the King twice and have outscored Queens opponents 31-5.

“We don't think we're the team to beat,” said Kellenberg head coach Keith Doran. “We have a lot of things to work on. We're very fortunate to be 4-0.”

Michael Keane put the Flyers ahead, 1-0, on an assist from Billy Sullivan 1:19 into the game. Just over three minutes later Michael Ziegler was left open in front of the net on the power play. His wrist shot beat Molloy junior goaltender Adrian Podpirka to put Kellenberg up, 2-0.

The Stanners (2-2 CHSHL 'A') took another penalty when the goal was scored and the Flyers converted with the man advantage again. Bobby Ehrhardt's slap shot went wide of the net, but Keane picked up the rebound and beat Podpirka low to the stick side giving the Flyers a commanding 3-0 lead.

“This is not like poker when you can throw three cards down and pick up three others,” said Molloy head coach Richie Rodgers. “It's almost good to lose like this because it exposes some of our weaknesses. In the first period we made some really stupid pee wee mistakes.”

Sullivan walked through the Molloy defense to give the Flyers a four-goal edge before the Stanners got on the board when Rob Rinaldo's wrist shot from the point beat Kellenberg keeper Dom McNulty.

Sullivan added another first period goal and James Purpura scored the final two Kellenberg goals while John DiGregorio scored the only other Stanner goal.

Molloy 4, St. Joseph by the Sea 2. The Stanners won their second straight game, defeating the Vikings at Abe Stark Arena on Coney Island Friday night.

Nicky Wilk had two goals and Chris Edele and Joey Evangelista added one apiece. DiGregorio, Greg Silverman, Kalaf, Wilk and Evangelista had assists. Podpirka stopped a breakaway and made 23 saves to earn the win.

Molloy returns to the ice Friday to take on Mount St. Michael at Rye Playland. Face-off is at 5:15 p.m.

Kellenberg Memorial 13, Christ the King 0. The Royals fell to 1-2 after losing their second game to the Flyers in 13 days at Murray Rink in Yonkers last Thursday night. Christ the King's next league game is against Mount St. Michael at Murray Rink on Dec. 26 at 4:15 p.m.
