The pride of Pack 106, Cub Scout Vincent Quagliata, 10, of Middle Village (photo above) shows off his best-in-show trophy and racer after winning this year’s Pinewood Derby, sponsored by NASCAR and The Greater New York Council of the Boy Scouts of America at the ESPN Zone, on Times Square in Manhattan.
The Council’s derby, a Scouting tradition since 1953 is open to the city’s 11,600 Cub Scouts between the ages of six and 10. Wolf Cubs (seven-year-olds) have their own race category, which was won by Pack 93’s Matthew Allie of Maspeth (photo below).
The boys made their own cars, to strict specifications, from kits and raced them on April 21. This year’s winners get a free trip for themselves and three guests to the NASCAR race of their choice.
