For many years and for many local residents, Fred J. Mazzarello was “The Mayor of College Point.” He founded the neighborhood booster organization, the College Point Board of Trade and was the long-time Chair of the local Memorial Day parade.
With Mazzarello’s passing in 2006, a movement sprang up to rename a street in his beloved neighborhood after him.
That hope was realized this year after Councilmember Tony Avella introduced the proposal to rename the street in front of the Board of Trade after Mazzarello, which was recently signed into law by Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
On Saturday, November 8, the ceremony took place at the intersection of 14th Road and College Point Boulevard - now known as “Fred J. Mazzarello Way.”
