Teaching the business of beauty

Two leaders in the beauty industry hosted an event recently for salon and spa owners – and shared their knowledge of the newest trends as well as tips for a successful business.

Lois Christie, President of Intercoiffure America/Canada and owner of Christie & Co. Salon • Spa, and Lydia Sarfati, President and CEO of Repêchage, met with salon owners and estheticians, all primped and excited to learn about revolutionizing their own businesses, at Limani Restaurant on Northern Boulevard on Monday, March 22.

Sarfati and Christie began holding events together just a year ago. The goal in their collaboration is to help other salons become as successful as Christie & Co. Salon • Spa.

“There is no competition between salons. If one salon does well, they all do,” Sarfati said.

“I can make people look good, but I wasn’t sure how I could make them feel good. That is where Lydia comes in,” said Christie.

With the help of Sarfati, Christie’s salon now features facials bars right at the windows of her store, so people walking by can see more of the services the salon has to offer.

According to Sarfati, people do not realize that they do not need to spend an entire day at a spa. By combining salon and spa services, clients can come in and leave, looking and feeling much better about themselves.

“Skin is the largest organ on our body and few people are taking care of it,” noted Sarfati. “We hope that by combining the businesses we can put skin care as a forefront for people to take seriously.”

After a year working with Sarfati and reinventing the spa portion of her salon, Christie saw a 34 percent increase in her business, even with the present economic climate.

Preeti Cannava, salon owner of Karma in Hicksville, L.I., was inspired when she heard of the success the Repêchage company had on Christie’s already popular salon. “I’ve had my salon for about a year now and I think adding a small spa would go a long way for my customers who are big on skin care.”

Sarfati and Christie will again team up on May 7 between 3 and 7 p.m. Clients can have their skin analyzed by a professional at Christie & Co. Salon • Spa, in The Bay Terrace Shopping Center.

“Repêchage is a perfect word to describe the treatments and products for a person who has either neglected or not taken care of their skin. It means second chance, and it can be a second chance for beautiful skin,” said Sarfati.
