Honoring those who ended a war

At a recent American Association of Veterans of WWII luncheon, they commemorated V-E Day, marking Germany’s surrender to the Allies on May 8, 1945 that ended World War II in Europe.

During the event, State Senator Toby Ann Stavisky received a medal of appreciation from the group.

Here, Stavisky presents a Senate Certificate of Appreciation to one of 48 veterans honored that day, Yefim Tsimbalyuk, a Flushing resident who fought in the Russian Army during what they call “The Great Patriotic War.” She is assisted by translator Sergey Kadinsky, whose grandfather was also honored that day.

Among Tsimbalyuk’s decorations is a medal for participating in the capture of Berlin. – Victor G. Mimoni
