The Jamaica Farmers market opened at 8:30 a.m. for its 37th season of delicious locally grown food on Friday, June, 24, at 160th Street off Jamaica Avenue.
The market – sponsored by the Greater Jamaica Development Corporation – will be offering visitors a wide variety of produce coming from regional farms all over New York.
One worker from Alex’s Tomato Farm from Carlisle, N.Y says that she has to travel more than five hours to get to the market every day.
Community Markets has been at the forefront of sustainable food for two decades and continues to develop markets that most profoundly embody the term “local.”
This year the Greater Jamaica Development Corporation is happy to announce that the market will now accept Food Stamps for those with Electronic Benefit Transter (EBT) cards to purchase food at the market. EBT is the electronic delivery method for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Programs (SNAP).
With the Jamaica Market’s participation in the SNAP/EBT/FNS Program, Queens Food Stamp recipients can increase their access to locally grown and locally produced food items. Eligible items include fruits, vegetables, honey and potted herbs.
