Off-duty cop injured in hit-and-run accident at Glendale intersection

Police were on the scene at the corner of 80th Street and Cooper Avenue after an off-duty officer was struck and injured in a hit-and-run accident Wednesday night.

Police arrested the driver of an SUV that struck and injured an off-duty NYPD officer who was attempting to cross a busy Glendale intersection Wednesday night, it was reported.

Authorities said the 48-year-old male officer was hospitalized in stable condition following the accident which occurred at 9:45 p.m. at the corner of 80th Street and Cooper Avenue.

Law enforcement sources said the officer was walking across Cooper Avenue in the crosswalk when he was struck by the SUV, described as a Toyota model, which had been traveling southbound on 80th Street.

Following the accident, the vehicle did not stop and fled the scene westbound on Cooper Avenue.

Members of the 104th Precinct and EMS units responded to the scene. Paramedics brought the officer, who suffered a head laceration, to Jamaica Hospital. The NYPD did not disclose the command to which the officer is assigned.

 

WABC-TV reported Thursday night that the SUV’s alleged driver, 50-year-old Ellen Rivera-Moya, was taken into custody in connection with the incident. Charges are pending.
