The New York Mets are the sixth most valuable franchise in Major League Baseball, according to a recent Forbes report. The magazine calculated that the Mets are worth $2 billion, up from last year’s value of $1.65 billion.
That the value of the Mets increased is no surprise, as the team’s recent success and playoff runs in 2015 and 2016 helped boost ticket sales and revenue, therefore pumping up the value of the team.
The Mets’ cross-town rivals, the New York Yankees, earned the top spot on the list with a value of $3.7 billion. The Los Angeles Dodgers ($2.75 billion), Boston Red Sox ($2.7 billion), Chicago Cubs ($2.675 billion) and San Francisco Giants ($2.65 billion) round out the top five, with the Mets checking in at six.
According to the report, the Mets saw a 21 percent increase in value from 2016, due in part to their $332 million in revenue last season, which ranked seventh amongst the 32 MLB franchises.
If the Mets continue to win with their core of homegrown starting pitchers and exciting sluggers, expect the value of the franchise to rise further heading into 2018.
