Queens residents can head over to College Point this weekend to collect a free rain barrel at a giveaway event on Sunday.

On July 30, rain barrels will be distributed at the Poppenhusen Institute at 114-04 14th Rd. between 10 a.m. and noon. They will be given away on a first-come, first-served basis.

The event is sponsored by Assemblyman Michael Simanowitz and Congressman Joseph Crowley. The lawmakers suggest you RSVP to either of their offices if you would like to pick up a barrel.

According to the NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), the 60-gallon rain barrels are easy to install and connect directly to a property owner’s downspout to capture and store the stormwater that falls on the rooftop. The water collected in the rain barrel can then be used to water lawns and gardens, or for other outdoor chores.

The barrels are part of the city agency’s effort to reduce water runoff and create a more sustainable city.

Simanowitz’s office can be reached at 718-969-1508. Crowley’s office can be reached at 718-779-1400. Any questions about the event should be directed to either legislator’s office.
