A busy Kew Gardens Hills intersection may soon become much safer thanks to upcoming addition of a left turn signal.

The Department of Transportation (DOT) announced that the intersection of Main Street onto Jewel Avenue will receive left turn signals in both directions. A major traffic corridor in the area, the intersection has proven to be dangerous for drivers and pedestrians alike.

Assemblyman Daniel Rosenthal and Councilman Rory I. Lancman called upon the DOT to explore traffic safety measures in Kew Gardens Hills following community concerns about the intersection. This past spring, their offices were joined by DOT Queens Borough Commissioner Nicole Garcia to tour the site.

After the visit, the DOT announced that it would be implementing a number of traffic safety improvements at the location.

“We join the community in welcoming this long-awaited left turn signal at Main Street and Jewel Avenue. This intersection is a major transportation and commercial hub for Kew Gardens Hills,” said Rosenthal and Lancman in a joint statement. “The addition of these signals will go a long way in ensuring that both drivers and pedestrians feel safer, without compromising the flow of traffic. We are grateful to DOT for their proactive and timely response to community concerns. We look forward to working with the department and the community in keeping an open dialogue about the safety of our residents.”

In addition to the left turn signals at the Main Street/Jewel Avenue intersection, the DOT has also begun to repair roadway cave-ins at this intersection that were caused by water main damage.
