Days after closing its doors, Ozone Park’s now-defunct Oxford Bake Shop received a New York State Senate Empire Award from Senator Joseph P. Addabbo Jr. of District 15 in recognition of its 90-plus years in business.

Oxford Bake Shop, which closed its doors with a farewell ceremony in front of the store on June 24, was owned and operated by Vicki Deegan and Felicemarie Misiti, who both received certificates of appreciation from Addabbo as well.

Originally, Addabbo planned to attend the farewell ceremony but was ultimately “called away on business,” according to Ozone Park Residents Block Association (OZPKRBA) President Sam Esposito. Still, Addabbo felt it was important to recognize the bakery and the women behind it even after the closure.

“So many people in this community, including myself, have grown up on the delicious treats from Oxford Bake Shop, like its [one-of-a-kind] crumb cake,” Addabbo released in a statement. “It’s sad that this business won’t be around anymore, but they will always be a part of New York history and our community’s heart. I am proud to have presented Vicki, Felicemarie and Oxford Bake Shop with these well-deserved awards today.”

During last weekend’s ceremony, Oxford Bake Shop also received a proclamation from District 32 Councilwoman Joann Ariola, also recognizing the business for its years of service to the community.

Up until its closure, Oxford Bakery was the longest existing business in one location in Ozone Park. The owners, Deegan and Misiti, ultimately decided to close the bake shop after years of “sacrifices,” including missed family events and holidays.

As for what will move into the store’s space in the future, OZPKRBA President Sam Esposito says the idea of keeping it a bakery has been brought up to the building’s owner but the future remains unclear.

“We don’t know what the future’s going to be like now,” Esposito said. “Just stay tuned to Facebook and we’ll make the announcement in the future as to what’s going to come.”
