A fire blazed through a private house in Bayside on Wednesday night and left five firefighters injured, according to the FDNY.

Fire Department sources said, said a call came in at 8:30 p.m. on Sept. 26 about a fire at a home located at 48-01 216th St. in the Bayside Hills section of the neighborhood. An FDNY spokesperson said that the blaze had spread across the first and second floor of the 2 1/2 story home.

Approximately 60 firefighters and EMS workers responded to the scene and were able to put the fire out. FDNY said that five firefighters were injured on the job; three refused medical attention and two were transported to North Shore University Hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

According to Department of Buildings records, the house had been rented out for “short stays” by multiple individuals. The house had also undergone a number of illegal conversions, including adding rooms in the basement and first floor.

FDNY could not confirm whether or not there were residents home at the time of the fire. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

A video of the incident was posted on the NYC Fire Wire Facebook page.

What is up with our Building Department? There are complaints going back 17 years, stating that the home had been illegally converted to single room occupancy. Why do we have a building department if they do not enforce the law???
