St. John’s alum drafted by Padres

St. John’s University alum Paul Karmas has been selected by the San Diego Padres in the 25th round (773rd overall) of this year’s Major League Baseball June Amateur draft.

The Douglaston native joins Johnnies shortstop Joe Panik, who was taken by the San Francisco Giants with the 29th overall pick Monday night. The teammates give St. John’s at least two draft picks for the fourth consecutive year.

Karmas, a three-time All-BIG EAST selection, capped off his historic four-year career at St. John’s, hitting .310 with five home runs, 40 RBI and a career-high 21 doubles.

The 6-foot-3, 210 pound first basemen ranks first in school history in hits (246) and doubles (68), while his 172 RBI place him second among all Red Storm thumpers.

During his time at St. Francis Prep, Karmas was a two-time team captain and led the Terriers to the CHSAA City Championship in his senior year.

In a statement on the university website, Karmas spoke about how thrilled he is to continue his baseball career.
“This is an absolute dream come true and by far the best day of my life,” said Karmas. “I am so thankful that the Padres called my name and are giving me the opportunity to continue my baseball career.”
