A Brooklyn man will spend the next 25 years behind bars for going on a rampage in a South Ozone Park home during which he viciously bit off the top of his girlfriend’s teenage cousin’s ear.
Reynoldo Rayside, 28, of Midwood Street in Brooklyn, was found guilty of first-degree assault and endangering the welfare of a child. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison to be followed by five years’ post release supervision.
According to trial testimony, on Oct. 2, 2014, the 15-year-old cousin of Anthryani Mitchell, who was Rayside’s girlfriend, heard a commotion in Mitchell’s South Ozone Park apartment. When he went inside, he saw Mitchell’s mother bleeding and injured on the floor and his cousin lying on the floor a short distance away in the kitchen, with Rayside hovering over her.
The 15-year-old ran into the kitchen and put himself between his cousin and Rayside. After the teen managed to get his cousin away from the defendant, Rayside grabbed the teen, bit his ear and ripped the top of his ear off completely.
The victim was left with permanent and disfiguring scars as a result of this attack.
“The young victim in this case was savagely assaulted when he came to the aid of his female cousin and her mother during an altercation between the women and the defendant,” Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown said. “Violence has no place in a civilized society. This defendant was convicted at trial and a judge has now sentenced him to a lengthy term of imprisonment.”
