A Jamaica man will spend time in prison for brutally attacking his pregnant wife at a homeless shelter last year, prosecutors announced on Tuesday.
After a weeklong trial, Mark King, 32, was convicted of second-degree assault on Jan. 14. King is due back in court for sentencing on Jan. 29, where he faces five to seven years in prison.
“This was a troubling crime and the defendant’s actions are reprehensible,” said District Attorney Richard A. Brown. “This husband failed to show love and respect for his wife nor care that she was carrying the couple’s unborn child. He brutally beat the woman he had vowed to protect. This defendant deserves significant punishment for his actions.”
According to trial testimony, on Feb. 3, 2018, King and his wife were living in a homeless shelter located at the Lincoln Motor Inn. King chased his wife, who was eight months pregnant at the time, from their fourth floor apartment and ultimately caught up with her inside of the lobby.
Witnesses then saw King, who was also caught on surveillance footage, beating his wife. He proceeded to throw a cellphone at her and then repeatedly kicked and stomped her in the head and body until she lost consciousness.
