U.S. Rep. Gregory Meeks hosted an award reception last Friday honoring Springfield Gardens High School’s football team’s historic Public Schools Athletic League (PSAL) championship win.

The reception, held at York College Faculty Dining Room, was packed with players and their families who were in attendance to celebrate Springfield Gardens Golden Eagles’ first ever PSAL City Wide Championship win. During the ceremony, Meeks presented each of the players with a congressional award and inspected their championship rings.

Meeks congratulated the jubilant attendees for their hard work and dedication during the football season. “While the odds were stacked against them, their hard work and discipline allowed them to emerge as champions. They serve as an example that with teamwork and dedication, you can accomplish anything,” he said.

Meeks was joined by New York Jets legend Tony Richardson to honor the champions. Richardson emphasized to the student-athletes that their teamwork aided them in becoming champions. “The game of football is the ultimate team sport,” Richardson said. “In the game of football it takes all 11 players to do the right thing.

A few of the players expressed their gratitude toward accomplishing the major feat. “This is a really big win,” said junior Jaylen Morrison, a running back for the football team. “Being the first group to take them there is special. We put a lot of work in during the season and it finally paid off,” he said.
